The Sony FE 20-70mm f/2.8 lens is the world’s first with this focal range and will be announced in a few weeks. The G Master lens would be presented to the public on January 17.
It was thought that the new Sony FE zoom lens would be showcased as early as CES 2023, but a clear date has emerged via Sony Alpha Rumors. So, it looks like Sony is hosting their own event for the announcement.
A special FE 20-70mm lens
You can already buy the Sony FE 24-70 mm f/2.8 G Master and the question is why Sony releases a lens that can be 4 mm wider. With the Sony 20-70 mm lens, it is not just about a lens, but about a lens that is 4 millimeters wider. That may not seem like much, but it makes a huge difference for wide landscapes and architecture, for example. It is also the first standard zoom lens in the world with this focal range.
For some photographers, the Sony FE 20-70mm will be a replacement for both their FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and 24-70mm. With the 16-35 mm f/2.8 GM, Sony now also has the light and compact FE 16-35 mm f/4 G PZ on the market.
Though, Sony isn’t the first to release a standard long-range zoom lens. With the 17-70 mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Sony E or Fuji X, Tamron also has a lens with such a range. However, this lens is intended for APS-C sensor cameras.
You pay for the extra millimeters
You will, of course, pay quite a bit of money for a full-frame lens with a 20-70 mm range. Especially if this lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 over the entire range. The lens is rumored to cost around 1600 Dollars. However, the image quality would be a lot higher than the ZEISS 24-70 mm f/4 for Sony FE.
