The Canon EOS R5 with 10x bigger resolution: 400MP

A major firmware update has made the Canon EOS R5 even more powerful. It is now possible to take photos of 400 megapixels.

It’s a unique firmware update for the Canon EOS R5, as it almost feels like an entirely new camera. By giving the 45MP sensor the ability to take 400MP photos, the resolution has been increased almost ten times. This is all possible thanks to the v1.81 firmware update for the Canon EOS R5.

Thanks to pixel shift 400MP photos

With the update, it is now possible for the internal image stabilization system to move the sensor and perform pixel shift. These super megapixel photos are especially suitable for architecture and landscape photographers. Though, the subjects must be completely static; otherwise you will get blurred photos.

Canon EOS R5 joins big names

Thanks to the higher resolution options, the camera can now work with more megapixels than the Fujifilm GFX 100S and Hasselblad X2D 100C. In addition, the EOS R5 can now do the same as the Fujifilm 100 megapixel cameras, which also use pixel shift.

Pixel Shift is a technique that has been used for a decade and was introduced by Olympus. It works quite simple: to produce large photos, the sensor moves up a pixel with every photo. By combining several photos, it is possible to get a super resolution photo. There are several cameras, such as the OM System OM-1 and Sony A7R V, that use Pixel Shift. Normally, the resolution is quadrupled and although Canon only started using this technique after 10 years, the resolution is nine times bigger (888%).

Powerful stabilization system from Canon

Apart from the new function that pixel shift is possible, Canon still has a superior stabilization system. It is possible to compensate up to 8-stops and that is more than the competition can do. Other brands can usually compensate up to 6 or 7 stops.
